BIM or Building information modeling is a powerful concept that enables efficiencies in building design and deployment. The use of object oriented technology allows either 2D or 3D objects to be tagged to facilitate automation in a number of different business processes where they get applied. These efficiencies range from communication efficiencies due to common shared data models across design, engineering and analysis, to the partial/extensive automation of estimation, scheduling, clash detection etc.
